Publishing House Argo – “Tossed by the Squalls”. The book about Bruno Linneberg.
To make Bruno Linneberg’s legacy available to the general public, the publisher Argo has published a book “Tossed by the Squalls. Captain Major Bruno Linneberg. Estonian Navy Officer and his time” by Reet Naber and Arto Oll for the exhibition of the same person in the Seaplane Harbour, Tallinn. It is a remarkable book where one can get a glimpse into a person’s intelligence activities and behind of scenes of the capabilities, which led to the person and his family escaping the death of the entire Soviet repressive machine.

Captain Major Bruno Alexander Linneberg is mainly known as the last Chief of Staff of the Estonian Navy. He was one of the most prominent officers of the Estonian Navy, whose years of service were in the period between the two World Wars. Already as a school student, he was involved in the battles of the Estonian War of Independence and was rewarded for his personal courage with the Cross of Liberty. As a junior officer, he was one of the first Estonian military personnel to have the opportunity to acquire military education abroad. As a naval officer, Bruno Linneberg served as a naval armament specialist, naval officer and commander of several warships and acted in the field of military intelligence.
On the basis of Bruno Linneberg’s 22 years of service, a more general overview of the formation of a junior officer in the Estonian Navy can also be given. The book also seeks to give an idea of how the military leader of a small country had to make difficult choices for the Republic of Estonia between 1939 and 1940.
The book is mainly based on documents stored in the Estonian National Archives and Tallinn City Archives, modern memories and the press of the time, to which the Linneberg family has provided additional photographic material and family heritage.
